OWC sells an external enclosure for the original Apple SSD you remove from your laptop. Last year people using third party SSDs (including OWC) were unable to upgrade macOS due to firmware issues and the only fix at the time was to install HS or Mojave to an original Apple SSD first so the system firmware was updated. Those are also the only third party SSDs with any official support behind them when used with a Mac. The upgrade process is straightforward and should only take around fifteen minutes to complete. Upgrade the internal storage of any 2006-2015 MacBook Pro to up to 2.0TB, and get up to 4.0TB for non-retina 2011-2016 models. You do have to be careful as one of the Aura SSDs requires OSX 10.13+ High Sierra to be used or the SSD won't be recognized. If you own a 2016 or older MacBook Pro and need more storage capacity, there is no better upgrade than an OWC SSD. The only option for an internal third party SSD without the use of an adapter is the OWC Aura SSDs which mentions. You will need to do more thorough research before choosing this option. I do know that some Samsung SSDs are not compatible with a Mac, but I don't know which ones. Any ideas how I can reliably wipe the drive without physically damaging it would be greatly appreciated.I know some people on these forums have used a Sintech adapter to use a standard M.2 SSD, but I believe you have to be careful which one you get. I know servicing Macs is very much a moving target since they're always changing their configurations, but this model has been out for a couple of years, and I'm a bit surprised that I can't find any SATA or USB adapters for it. The SSD has a 16 + 12 pin configuration on one side, and an 11 + 14 pin configuration on the other. Do any of you know where I can find an adapter for this, so I can connect to it and wipe it? Two days later and I still can't find an adapter that will allow me to access the drive on another Mac (I don't have another 2015 MBA to use).
I restored their data from a backup and they're in good shape now, but now I want to wipe the MBA's SSD to prevent any of their personal data from ending up in the wrong hands.
