The first lines (At night they would go walking, till the breaking of the day / The morning is for sleeping) are an indirect reference to the fact that the planes often bombed during night, and so civilians had to stay alert, only sleeping during the morning. (If you listen with headphones, the sound pans from right to left a few seconds in, like a plane flying by.) This song is about the bombing raids by the German air force on London. The chorus that can be heard toward the end is symbolic of remembered revelry and innocence among British youth that was quashed after war broke out.Ĭemeteries of London: The transition between track one and track two (the smooth, dark synth sound) is an airplane. That’s why, even though there was a depression and things probably weren’t that great, the main character of the album remembers peacetime as technicolor to the war’s black and white. However, I think the main thrust of the song is the feeling of pre-war Britain, as it is remembered years later. It is, as many have said, a piece about birth, about discovering the beauty of all the world’s colors, etc. Life in Technicolor: In some ways, the most straightforward song on the album.

I view this as a concept album that tells the story of a man who fought in World War II, examining his love, loss, and hope for the future in 45 mins. In November 2019, the band released their eighth album Everyday Life, described by Rolling Stone as “Coldplay’s rangiest and deepest release by orders of magnitude, maybe even their best” and by GQ as "A gift – hard to deem it anything less than Coldplay's best".Viva La Vida being my favorite album ever, I thought I'd share my interpretation of it with r/Coldplay. Since forming at university in London, Coldplay have gone on to become one of the planet’s most popular acts, selling more than 80 million copies of their eight Number One albums, which have spawned a string of hits including Yellow, Clocks, Fix You, Paradise, Viva La Vida, A Sky Full Of Stars, Hymn For The Weekend, Adventure Of A Lifetime and, most recently, Orphans.
